Many people dread selection criteria, but the truth is, once you know how to formulate your responses, it's not as intimidating: it still takes a significant amount of work, but it doesn't have to be daunting.
Most public sector organisations, NGOs, non-profits, educational institutions and an increasing number of private companies require candidates to respond to selection criteria as part of the job application process in some form or other. So for many of us, crafting responses to selection criteria questions is an unavoidable fact of working life.
Recent changes to employer expectations
However, recent labour market trends have pointed to a general move away from the traditional laborious, long form response (we can hear your sigh of relief from here!).
Instead, we are seeing increasing numbers of organisations requiring 2 page statements against either specific selection criteria in the position description or a list of attributes and skills in a job advertisement, or a long form cover letter of up to 2 pages that argues how you are a good fit for the role.
We are also seeing various organisations nominating a question for you to respond to, citing a specific example from your work history to demonstrate your skills in practice.

Full Responses
Ahh the good old traditional approach. Everyone's favourite (not). This involves a meeting with you to unpack your experience, identify your examples that are appropriate for the criteria questions and make notes that will enable us to then put together your responses in full.
This is the most comprehensive approach and as such, involves the greatest investment. Contact us for an accurate quote.
Instead of asking us to write each of your responses from scratch, there are options to reduce your spend including:
- Book a coaching session ($150 for an hour) and we can tackle as many as we can in the time provided, while walking you through the process so you can finish it off, yourself.
- Ask us to tackle the hardest, most complex of the criteria questions, and then you can model the easier responses from the one/s provided.
- Write the criteria responses yourself and ask us to read over them and provide feedback or edit them for you to tighten and polish the final result.
Full Responses Written from Scratch:
Criteria Intro + Example Plan
This option provides you with the complete introductory paragraph to each criterion response and a plan for you to follow to write out each example that demonstrates your ability to meet each criterion.
This option includes a meeting (either via phone or face to face) to unpack your skills relevant to each criterion and discuss example options. Contact us for a full quote.
Criteria Editing
If you have already written your criteria responses and you'd like a professional eye to take a look at it to make sure it follows the appropriate formula and is written cohesively in response to the full extent of each criterion, this is the option for you.
This option is on a quote basis and your investment will be dependent on the amount of work involved. Contact us for a quote.
Criteria Coaching
Give a person a fish, feed them for a day. Teach a person to fish, feed them for a lifetime. We can work with you to teach you the formula for writing selection criteria responses and help you formulate as many responses as we can fit into the allotted time.
Two Page Statement / Cover Letter
When the criteria requirements are a two page response encompassing all of the criteria, you will need a Statement/Long Cover Letter to submit with your application. Like the other options, this approach requires a one hour session (face-to-face, via Zoom or via phone) to unpack your skills specifically in alignment with the selection criteria and from there, we will write your two-page response for you.
